Four plants to sow in February

In February, the classics of the vegetable garden are waiting to be planted: tomatoes, courgettes, peppers and carrots.

All you need is a few seed pots and a windowsill.

If you own a heated greenhouse, you can also plant the first seeds here.

One type of vegetable is even allowed directly outdoors:

  • Tomatoes:

The classics of the vegetable garden, the tomatoes, need a lot of light when growing, otherwise the tender little plants will wither.

That means they grow unnaturally fast, turn yellowish and only develop weak roots.

Therefore, only a very bright window sill is suitable as a location, or you can use a plant lamp.

Buy a seed tray with a transparent lid and fill it with potting soil.

If you want to save yourself the later pricking, you can use small humus pots or coconut swelling tabs.

  • Zucchini:

Place a seed in a plant pot filled with potting soil.

According to the My Beautiful Garden

    portal, the temperature should be

    around 20 degrees.

From mid-May, the zucchini plants can then move to the vegetable patch.

  • Peppers:

This vitamin-rich vegetable likes it warm and grows slowly.

Therefore, you should start growing as early as possible.

The ideal germination temperature is 25 degrees.

It is therefore best to choose a mini greenhouse for sowing and place it in a south-facing window.

After about four weeks pricking can begin.

After the ice saints, the small pepper plants then move outdoors.

  • Carrots:

Carrots are less demanding and can therefore be sown directly outdoors as early as February (minimum temperature: 5 °C).

Before sowing, the seeds should be soaked in quartz sand for 24 hours.

    The

    Lower Saxony Chamber of Agriculture

advises mixing carrot seeds with a fast-germinating marker seed, such as radishes, and sowing them in rows.

In the event of another cold snap, be sure to cover the garden bed with a warming fleece.

Alternatively, carrots can also be grown on the balcony - in tubs or flower boxes.

Fast-growing vegetables such as radishes, lettuce or spinach are suitable as marker seeds – but please only mix them in sparingly.

The marker seed makes it easier for you to identify slowly germinating vegetables such as carrots in the bed, which is extremely helpful when weeding.

If the carrot plants are clearly visible, remove the marker seed again.
