Kurt, volunteer helper

»My family is also there themselves.

Some of my fiancée's (family) are also under the rubble and we are awaiting a positive response, if any.

That's the problem.

You're always vacillating.

You try to get up, then you fall down again because you see the news.

That's the problem."

Together with other volunteers, Kurt collects donations for the victims of the earthquake in the Turkish-Syrian border region at a Turkish music school in Berlin-Kreuzberg.

Sacks of clothing, food and thick blankets have been piling up in the school rooms since Monday.

The donations must be unpacked and sorted.

A huge logistical task.

Nurdan, Volunteer

»It is sometimes chaotic because many people quickly dumped things they didn't need from home.

But here a lot has already been done very clearly, quickly and actively.

We've sorted everything out.

We have already organized a lot of people who can transport everything to the trucks.«

Christine is a teacher in Kreuzberg.

Today she is tackling with her students.

Christine, volunteer

»We discussed this in class yesterday.

That's why we're here with the whole school class to help.

We have a lot of Turkish students and they now want to help people.”

The willingness to donate was so great here that the volunteers in the music school had to stop accepting donations after just one day.

They are currently waiting for the first loads to be transported away.

Change of location: around five kilometers further, in the Berlin district of Neukölln, a similar picture.

In the warehouses of a company, Tamer and the other helpers sort, pack and label boxes and sacks.

Tamer, Volunteer

»We made 15 pallets for the plane.

Three hours later will go.«

Many private transport companies make their capacities available to provide effective assistance.

After stopping the acceptance of clothing, many clubs are now calling for donations of money, hygiene items, baby and pet food.

However, it is unclear how quickly the help will arrive.

Logistical challenges in Syria and Turkey make the work difficult.
