Conductor Paul McCrish, who recorded a meticulous reconstruction of the four coronations that took place in England in the 20th century, will participate in the International Chamber Music Festival • "We are clinging to the glorious past of the Empire," he says

Conductor Paul McCrish, founder of Ensemble Gabrieli from England, has already participated more than once in the international chamber music festival held every winter in Eilat, and he returns to it again, for what he calls "an unusual combination between music and tourism".

At the festival, Makrish and his ensemble will perform two concerts of the works of the 17th century English composer Henry Purcell, all of which are related in some way to the kings of England.

Makrish will conduct songs of praise for Queen Mary II and "King Arthur", a theatrical work written for the court of King Charles II.

Three years ago, Mikrish recorded a meticulous and meticulous reconstruction of the four coronations that took place in England in the 20th century, a recording that was widely praised for its originality and daring.

"In today's England, hospitals don't work, the roads are jammed, the post office is closed - but somehow, regarding ceremonies, we still know how to put on spectacular theatrical shows," he says.

According to him, "The coronation of King Charles, which is expected to take place this May, is indeed theater, a show, we have to be honest about it. Sometimes I wonder to myself if the more we immerse ourselves in the madness of Brexit and local politics - the more effort we put into ceremonies , in splendor and magnificence, and clinging to the glorious past of the empire."

Is the upcoming coronation expected to take place in the usual splendor and magnificence?

"As far as I understand she will be 'skinnier' than usual, perhaps because this whole thing smells like something musty that has gone out of fashion. There were times when lords and ladies would pass in procession before the new sovereign, take off their hats and bow, and I think such things are no longer common This is accepted in today's society," he laughs.

The festival will open today (Wednesday) at the Dan Eilat Hotel and will continue until Saturday.
