A fitness trainer decided to show his followers that what matters in losing weight is not the type of food but the caloric deficit. After a month of eating mostly pizza, he managed to lose weight

Could the secret to weight loss be eating an entire pizza tray every day?!

A man in Ireland says he lost more than three pounds despite eating 10 slices of pizza every day for a month.

Furthermore, he is now more muscular than at the start of this delicious diet.

Personal trainer Ryan Mercer, 34, says he ate pizza for breakfast, lunch and dinner and managed to lose about 10 pounds during the 30-day challenge.

He took on the challenge of showing how calorie deficit diets allow people to lose weight without restricting their favorite foods.

Ryan, from Bangor in Northern Ireland, carefully planned his diet and made all the pizzas himself, while maintaining his usual training regime.

Made the pizza, didn't order it

"January is a tough month for people when it comes to fitness goals," Mercer says in the video.

"My goal is to emphasize not only fat loss on calories in and calories out, but it's also not about restriction. We don't have to limit our favorite foods to get results and I also wanted to encourage more people to prepare their own food."

Ryan's regular diet is a flexible approach to eating, with healthy protein intake, and seven to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.

For the challenge, however, Ryan ate nothing but pizza.

"I ate pizza for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day," the 34-year-old says in his video.

"I had two pita pizzas and one larger dough-based pizza per day, which was equivalent to about 10 slices of bread per day. Plus, I left room for extra snacks."

Pizza is one of Ryan's favorite foods, but due to his busy schedule, he had trouble finding time to make the pizzas himself.

"The hardest part of the whole diet was the preparation," says Mercer.

"Pizza is one of my all-time favorite foods, so I enjoyed eating it all month, although I made sure to have a large variety of different pizzas to give myself some variety."

Lost weight and surprised the followers

"I cooked everything at home," said the coach.

The estimated daily cost was around NIS 30 per day for two pizza pitas, and one pizza based on dough and three salads on the side.

In addition, he spent about NIS 9 or 12 per day on snacks.

At the end of the month, Ryan became thinner, which surprised many of his online followers.

"It was a carefully planned nutritional strategy. I designed a system, and that's what got me to my goal," continues Mercer.

"Daily calorie intake is set at 1,800-2,100 Monday through Friday, 2,700 kcal Saturday and Sunday, daily protein target 140 grams per day, daily fruit and vegetable portion target, seven minimum portions per day."

Ryan recommends the diet only if it fits the lifestyle of the person, while noting that “everyone is different.” His video exposure garnered over two million views online and created a huge response.

"I feel [the video] highlighted the confusion among the masses when it comes to fat loss and nutrition," says Mercer.

"I had some negative comments, some very funny and of course some positive feedback. One thing we have in common is that we all eat food so everyone has some kind of opinion when it comes to nutrition."

Interestingly, a 2020 study found that it is possible to eat all the pizza you want (but only occasionally) and not harm your health.

The researchers whose research was published in the British Journal of Nutrition decided to recruit a group of volunteers and feed them unlimited pizzas.

14 men between the ages of 22 and 37 volunteered for the task. During the first session, they were asked to eat pizza until they were full, but not full.

In the second session, they were asked to eat pizza until they were physically unable to take another bite.

The researchers found that the participants consumed double the amount of calories in the second session (the all-you-can-eat session), although the amount of pizzas eaten varied greatly between participants.

The researchers measured the blood glucose levels of the participants four hours after they finished eating and found that they were not higher after the session in which they ate without restriction compared to the session in which they ate reasonably.
