There are quite a few people who feel really bad every time the ground shakes under them, and not just because it's terribly stressful. Our doctor explains the connection between earthquakes and seasickness

The last week was marked by earthquakes, and besides the great tragedies in Turkey and Syria, quite a few people here were also attacked by anxiety when they felt the ground shaking under their feet.

And there were also quite a few people who felt really sick because of it.

The reason for this, surprisingly, is seasickness.

Seasickness, or motion sickness, occurs when there is a mismatch between what the eye sees and what the inner ear feels.

In the inner ear there are crystals that help control our balance.

The crystals balance on three axes (X, Y and Z).

When the inner ear senses that we are on a plane at a certain angle, but the eye does not see it, we may feel bad.

A combination of nausea and anxiety is never good.

Seasickness often manifests itself in dizziness, nausea and even vomiting.

It is very common that we experience motion sickness when we are on a boat at sea (because it is difficult to recognize the plane we are on by looking at it), but it can also occur in a car (when looking away from the direction of travel), on a train ride and even on a flight.

During an earthquake, the ground loses stability but there is no eye contact with the displacements.

Therefore, people who are sensitive to vibrations may feel the same sensation as motion sickness.

This will happen after and following the movement of the earth, not before it happened.

Just like with motion sickness, driving in a car or sailing a boat, those people may feel sick before the others.

In addition, there is also a psychological effect, the feeling that there is no stability and the physical stress in a person who goes through such an experience, which also causes a feeling of discomfort and physical symptoms.

Can people who suffer from such motion sickness feel the earthquake before everyone else?

probably not.

No one can predict an earthquake based on internal feelings alone.

Scientists can predict areas prone to soil instability and even focus on a more specific area.

There is also evidence, as early as 373 BC, that animals in Greece were displaced from their natural habitat days before a devastating earthquake. There is also evidence of people from China, several decades ago, who noticed the strange behavior of the animals and us outside for several nights until an earthquake did occur significant land.
