Transfer market: 4,728 transfers in January, a record

This is what emerges from the International Transfer Snapshot (January 2023) published by Fifa, which identifies new historical highs, with the total expenditure of the clubs for transfers at 1.57 billion dollars.

According to the report, a total of 4,387 transfers were completed for men's football alone during the January 2023 window. This represents an all-time high since the launch of the Transfer Matching System in 2010. Total spending by clubs on transfer fees has also set a new record: $1.57 billion was spent in January, about $230 million more than the previous record window of January 2018.

In particular, the number of transfers increased by 14.4% compared to the same period of 2022 (3,834), with the total value of transfer fees increasing by 49.4% compared to the amount spent in January 2022 (1, 05 billion dollars).

English clubs lead the international transfer spending bill in January 2023 with a total outlay of $898.6 million - which represents 57.3 per cent of January's total spend globally - followed by a notable distance from France with 131.9 million dollars.

In women's football, the total number of international transfers also reached a new all-time high with 341 transfers, an increase of 30.2% compared to January 2022. Transfer fees also set a new record with 774.

The list of transfers in was led by Colombia with 35, while Sweden and the US both led for transfers out, each with 26.
