Canal+ takes a 30% stake in TV operator MultiChoice

As the largest shareholder in the South African television company MultiChoice, the French group is strengthening its position on the African continent.


Canal+, the largest shareholder in the South African television giant MultiChoice, announced on Friday that it had increased its stake to 30.27% of the capital of the operator listed in Johannesburg.

Canal+, a subsidiary of the Vivendi group led by conservative billionaire Vincent Bolloré, is present in Africa in 25 countries through 15 subsidiaries, according to data from the French group.

Its position as the largest shareholder in the South African behemoth, in which it held 6.5% of the capital in 2020, allows Vivendi to gain a foothold in English-speaking and Portuguese-speaking Africa, where MultiChoice has 22.1 million subscribers in more than 50 countries, end of September 2022.
