With the legalization of cannabis planned by the federal government, the German Philology Association, the professional association of high school teachers, is pushing for protection zones around schools and day-care centers.
"We need a radius of at least five kilometers around the schools where cannabis cannot be legally purchased," says Susanne Lin-Klitzing, chairwoman of the association.
A ban in the schoolyard or on school trips can be implemented in the same way as alcohol has been used up to now.
"But we also have to prevent cannabis use from becoming fashionable in the immediate vicinity of schools," said Lin-Klitzing.
If the proposal were implemented, large parts of the cities and communities in Germany would be closed to legal cannabis trade.
The traffic light coalition had agreed to legalize the purchase and possession of the drug for adults up to a quantity of 30 grams, a corresponding bill is currently being prepared.
Health Minister Karl Lauterbach only stated in October when presenting the plans for licensed cannabis shops: “These shops must not be near schools or kindergartens.”
