Music wins: favorites, disappointments and challenges before the ceremony

2023-02-10T11:51:50.556Z

Despite a very wise selection, what surprises can the 38th edition of the Victoires de la Musique provide, live tonight?

All the small world of French music and French-speaking song has an appointment, Friday evening, at the musical Seine, at the gates of Paris, for the ceremony of the 38th Victoires de la Musique.

Everyone ?

Rather, a sample, like the very tight selection with important deja-vu tunes that is in the running.

A total of eight trophies are at stake and, if we exclude the "contractually" new female and male revelations, only ten artists are competing for six prizes.

Angèle, Orelsan, Stromae, Clara Luciani, Bigflo and Oli, Izia, Apple, Grand Corps Malade (in collaboration with Ben Mazué and Gaël Faye) and Jeanne Aded are therefore in the starting blocks.

Together, however, they have already accumulated no less than 33 Victories.

Orelsan, alone, holds 9. The only one still unprized, until tonight at least, is the Belgian Pierre de Maere, in the running for the song of the year and the male revelation.

And that the absent ones are reassured: Grand Corps Malade, "forgotten" last year, is fished out this year.

Message received by Benjamin Biolay,

"out in the group stage"

in 2023, but determined to come back

"stronger

".

On these bases, the prize list should spare all susceptibilities, both those of the artists and those of their labels and please - almost - everyone.

Including the public?

This remains to be proven.

As far as viewers are concerned, the evening is usually held better than the Césars, Molières or Cannes ceremonies, but it is far from establishing itself as a great moment in television: the Victoires 2022 had been followed by 2.67 million viewers: in 2021 by 3 million, a record for the decade.

Will music lovers find their way there?

Only in part.

If Clara Luciani, Angèle or Stromae were still among the biggest sellers of albums in 2022, the ceremony once again misses out on the gold mines of so-called urban music and its fans.

To the point that defenders of the genre are organizing to launch their own ceremony: the Flames.

If the Victories are a reflection of sales or the taste of the public, they only very partially fulfill their duty.

If they seek to salute the talents and the freshness of French-speaking creation, there is reason to worry about the lack of renewal.

For the public with a more classic taste, Serge Lamare will receive a victory honoring his entire career launched in 1964 in cabarets.

Strong symbol: February 11 is the day of his 80th birthday.

In the middle of this maelstrom, it is up to Laury Thilleman to host the show for the third time – but without Stéphane Bern or Olivier Minne as in previous years.

The evening is broadcast on France 2 and France Inter from 9 p.m.
