Aldi has already announced that it will no longer use cheap meat when it comes to fresh meat.

Now the discounter is expanding its animal welfare offensive.

Essen/Mülheim an der Ruhr – Aldi wants to completely get away from selling meat from factory farming.

The discounter missed a clear plan for this in 2021: by 2030, fresh meat should come exclusively from the more animal-friendly forms of husbandry 3 (outdoor climate) and 4 (premium).

Shortly thereafter, Kaufland followed suit with the animal welfare offensive.

As a first step, by 2025, meat from beef, pork, chicken and turkey from husbandry type 1 (stall husbandry) should disappear completely from the shelves and refrigeration.

A year later, a third of the fresh meat sales should come from stages 3 and 4.

From 2030, Aldi no longer wants to sell cheap meat.

In the future, Aldi also wants to do without cheap meat for meat and sausage products

What was initially only intended for fresh meat should now also apply to chilled meat and sausage products at the discounter.

Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd are expanding “the animal welfare range for their customers”.

In this range, too, they want to do without cheap meat by 2030.

Similarly, by 2026, a third of the meat and sausage products should come from husbandry types 3 and 4, but only for own-brand goods.

However, the ban on cheap meat has met with criticism from farmers.

“The next logical step for us is to expand the change in attitude to chilled meat and sausage products.

We enable suppliers and farmers to better market a larger part of the animal and at the same time expand our range of goods from higher forms of husbandry," said Julia Adou, Director of Corporate Responsibility at Aldi Süd.

Aldi wants to offer customers animal welfare products "always at the best price-performance ratio".

“Aldi stands for good things for everyone.

This also means that we want to enable everyone to shop sustainably.

Our customers can rely on the fact that they always get animal welfare products from Aldi at the best price-performance ratio," added Katrin Beyer, Business Unit Director Category Management at Aldi Nord.

It is still unclear how the expanded animal welfare offensive will affect consumers' wallets.

Aldi gave no information on pricing.

It can be assumed that meat and sausage products will become more expensive.

According to Lebensmittel Zeitung

, shortly after the announcement in 2021 that cheap meat would be

banned, the prices for fresh meat in supermarkets and discounters rose.
