(ANSA) - WASHINGTON, FEBRUARY 10 - The Pentagon shot down an unidentified object over Alaska on Thursday evening on the orders of Joe Biden.

The New York Times reported it quoting an administration official, in an incident that follows that of the Chinese spy balloon that flew over the United States.

Shortly thereafter, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby confirmed the downing of the object, which was flying at a high altitude over Alaska.

The unidentified object was shot down on the orders of President Joe Biden.

"We describe it as an object because that's the best description at the moment. We don't know who it belongs to," Kirby said, explaining that the object was significantly smaller in size than the Spiakinese balloon that flew over the United States, describing it as a "car small size".

According to Kirby, the object was flying 40,000 feet (12,000 meters) high and could have endangered civil aviation traffic, and was shot down by an F-22 jet with a Sidewinder missile.
