Simone Consonni from Bergamo conquered the silver medal in the Omnium and thus allowed Italy to move the medal table of the European track cycling also on the fourth day of competitions, despite Elia Viviani's forfeit, due to an attack sudden flu.
Already protagonist with the quartet and in the points race, Consonni did not disappoint expectations, bowing only to the strong Frenchman Benjamin Thomas.
"I took the captain's place, I hope I replaced him worthily - he said after the awards ceremony -. I like the race for points. I'm happy to have defended myself against champions like Thomas, who had an incredible race".
The transalpine arrived in the final points race with two points behind the blue and six from the top, he immediately made it clear that he was aiming for the big target. he won the first three sprints, then gained a lap, while Consonni didn't immediately take his wheel
: "I wanted to surprise him and so I waited for the second part of the race to try something", he explained.
After 50 laps he got into action gaining the lap that catapulted him into second position.
From that moment on it was a struggle between the two, but in the end the silver didn't take away the smile from the blue: "A medal that's always nice, especially if it comes after two European titles".
The blue medal table, at the end of the day, counts three gold and two silver medals.
It could have been even richer thanks to Miriam Vece, who instead stopped at the foot of the podium in the final where she had entered with the second fastest time overall.
The German Hinze won the continental title ahead of the world champion Kouame and the Dutch van der Wouw, who preceded the blue by only 3 cents.
