Vauban in a letter. addressed to Louis XIV in 1695. Located two nautical miles from Saint-Malo, on an isolated rock, battered by winds and currents, this fort is a real stroke of genius.
When one knows the dangers posed by the rocks in the bay of Saint-Malo, the violence of the currents, the spectacular variations in the level of the tides, one can only be amazed that the commissioner general of the king's fortifications was able to build in a such a severe environment a fortress capable of withstanding the most violent storms.
