One of South Africa's best-known rappers, musician Kiernan Forbes, who performed under the name AKA, has been shot dead in Durban in the south-east of the country.
"It is with great sadness that we confirm the death of our beloved son," the artist's parents said.
Forbes was killed along with another man on Friday night while both were walking to their car from a restaurant.
Two armed suspects approached them from across the street and shot at point-blank range, according to police.
The motive for the crime was initially unclear.
The 35-year-old musician had won numerous awards in South Africa.
He has also been nominated once for an MTV Europe Music Award and multiple times for a BET Award in the United States.
South Africa has one of the highest homicide rates in the world.
