At Carnival 2023, everyone wants to celebrate and have a good time with camels.

But when celebrating together, there are also rules that must be observed.

Cologne – The days of foolishness are just around the corner: no later than next Thursday, February 16, 2023, the carnival strongholds throughout Germany will be drumming up for the street carnival 2023 until the following Wednesday, Ash Wednesday, when everything is over again.

Yes, there are a lot of rules to follow when celebrating Carnival 2023 together.

Some wonder if they can come to work in costume, others wonder if you can wear all costumes - or if there are no-gos.

kreiszeitung.de from IPPEN.MEDIA explains what is possible.

Carnival 2023: Jecke need to know this when they go partying - Don't just stay away from work

Carnival celebrations are part of February in many places, including in companies.

But what if you're not a fan yourself?

Even then you can't just go home - at least if the carnival celebration at work takes place during regular working hours and the employer makes it clear that it is a business-related event organized by him.

"If you don't want to celebrate, you have to work normally," said Cologne specialist lawyer for labor law Volker Görzel in an article in the Deutsche Handwerks Zeitung.

However, whether the employer is allowed to prescribe a disguise at the workplace during carnival depends on the specific situation.

This could be permissible, for example, if the employees' costumes are part of a marketing campaign - and this is justified by a corresponding regulation.

"In the case of a carnival celebration in the company, however, I would be very careful with such a requirement," says Görzel.

For employees who would like to dress up for carnival or carnival in the office, company, etc., the following applies: Employees can wear whatever they want at work, including a costume.

But there are exceptions: "Certain jobs require a mandatory dress code, for example working at a bank, jobs with frequent customer contact or jobs that require protective clothing to be worn," said Görzel in the article.

It's also not that easy to stay away from work on the great days.

Because neither Women's Carnival nor Shrove Monday or Violet Tuesday are public holidays.

So if you want to avoid the celebrations, you have to take a vacation.

The same applies, by the way, if you looked too deep into a glass at a carnival celebration.

Coming to work drunk is not a good idea and if you really want to sober up, you should take a day off right away.

You should also pay attention to which costume you wear, because not everything is possible.

There are even costumes that are forbidden.

Anyone who does not follow the rules faces a fine of up to 10,000 euros.

Carnival 2023: Jecke need to know this when they go partying - which costumes are forbidden

  • Real-looking uniforms:

If you are dressed as a police officer or in other uniforms of public authorities and organizations, it must be clearly recognizable that it is a costume.

  • Prohibited symbols on costumes:

Certain symbolic signs are prohibited in Germany.

The best-known example is the swastika.

This not only applies to carnival, but also applies to your costume.

Even a disguise as Hitler is unlikely to go down well.

  • Real-looking dummy weapons:

As with uniforms, dummy weapons must clearly show that they are fake weapons.

If you wear dummies that look confusingly similar in public, you commit an administrative offense and risk a fine of up to 10,000 euros.

You should also make sure that under the influence of alcohol, one or the other insurance that you can otherwise rely on in everyday life does not apply.

Ingo Aulbach from the Federal Association of German Insurance Merchants (BVK) points this out.

Private accident insurance companies, for example, usually do not pay for permanent damage caused by an accident under the influence of alcohol.

According to Aulbach, only so-called comfort insurances still pay.

Anyone who causes damage to third parties or the property of third parties is usually protected by personal liability insurance.

In principle, drinking alcohol is not a problem here, says Aulbach.

The accident protection of private liability insurance only fails if someone is intentionally harmed.

Carnival 2023: Jecke need to know this when they go partying – asking the insurance company helps

If you want to be on the safe side, you should ask your insurance specialist before the move or the party which regulation applies.

For example, if something breaks during a carnival parade due to camels flying around, or if someone is injured, this is regularly regulated by organizer liability insurance.

However, according to Aulbach, compensation for pain and suffering cannot be demanded for every small scratch and for every pair of glasses.

In the past, according to the insurance expert, courts have already ruled that spectators who take part in events with "throwing missiles" accept minor injuries as a condonation.
