Carlos Saura's family makes a plea in defense of public health | Carla Simón, one of the favorites of the night, has remembered the filmmaker and his "unlimited creative freedom" | The festival is celebrated this Saturday in Seville with Antonio de la Torre and Clara Lago as hosts

The 37th Goya Awards gala has just started at the Palace of Exhibitions and Congresses in Seville with a huge background photo of the director Carlos Saura.

The guests, on their way down the red carpet, have remembered the director, who died this Friday at the age of 91.

"I'm sorry I can't be with you", the filmmaker has written in a letter that his wife, Eulalia Ramón, has read on stage, where she has made a plea for public health.

Saura will receive the Goya de Honor posthumously.

The director Carla Simón, one of the favorites of the night, has recalled the "unlimited creative freedom" of the filmmaker.

The actors Antonio de la Torre and Clara Lago are hosting the gala in a year considered almost unanimously as the best year for Spanish cinema.

Carlos Saura's family makes a plea in defense of public health

The family of filmmaker Carlos Saura, who died yesterday at the age of 91, has collected the Goya de Honor that the Academy had awarded him.

During the thank you speech, at the beginning of the gala, Saura's widow, Eulalia Ramón, made a plea in defense of public health.

"Public health deserves that we take care of it just as public personnel take care of us."

Saura's wife, Eulalia Ramón, has read a letter that the filmmaker had written: "I regret not being able to be with you."

The legacy of Carlos Saura marks the start of the Goya ceremony

Carlos Saura's career has been so long that he has worked with various generations of performers.

On the blue carpet it has been curious to see how the younger filmmakers and actors have chosen 'Quick, quick', because of how the canonical filmmaker understood a new batch of young Spaniards.

Carla Simón herself says that she feels that her protagonist could be her mother.

Juan Diego Botto and Penélope Cruz have chosen the same film.

After the longest applause in the history of the Goyas, Anna Saura, Antonio Saura and Eulalia Ramón have collected the Goya de Honor from Carmen Maura, their mythical Carmela from 'Ay, Carmela'.

Anna has talked about culture, about that legacy, while Antonio Saura Medrano, a film producer and sometimes his father, has talked about the four women who gave him seven children,

that accompanied and encouraged his career.

Eulalia Ramón had in her hand the letter that Carlos Saura dictated to her at home, one of the secrets of the ceremony.

The best year of Spanish cinema pays tribute to Carlos Saura at the Goyas

Tommaso KochAmalia Bulnes

The Goyas were going to give him a moment.

The great moment of him.

His life, however, had other designs: Carlos Saura passed away this Friday at the age of 91 and could not receive the Honor award from his colleagues.

But, then, the entire event itself has become a huge recognition of the Aragonese genius.

“Without a doubt, the last great director in the history of Spanish cinema has left.

It is incredible that they had not already given him an award like that”, said Maribel Verdú, who worked with him at Goya in Bordeaux.

Although, deep down, the crop of films nominated for the awards of this 2023 already represented the greatest tribute to Saura: his gala is also that of the best year of Spanish cinema.

Quality as a farewell banner for him, as a legacy of the eternal filmmaker to those who come after him.

The master showed the way for decades.

First of all, Carlos Saura

When the light comes on on the stage of the 37th edition of the Goyas, the first thing you see is an image of Carlos Saura.

Accompanied, by the way, by his inseparable camera.

It could not be otherwise: all Spanish cinema and the gala, of course, have been shocked by the death of the Aragonese maestro at the age of 91.

Manuel Carrasco sings and plays, and he is joined by the presenters, Antonio de la Torre and Clara Lago, along with other protagonists of Spanish cinema.

"It would take a thousand finery like this to honor his legacy," says De la Torre at the beginning of the ceremony.

It is perhaps because of this personal appreciation that Verdú wanted to protest because the recognitions are always so late despite careers as brilliant as those of the Aragonese filmmaker: “It seems incredible to me that she still did not have the Goya de Honor.

Saura is, without a doubt, the last great director in the history of Spanish cinema”.

The 'sheet' of the shorts

The Goya gala often serves as a loudspeaker for claims, both in the speeches of the winners and before, on and off the red carpet.

For years there were protests by the extras before the entrance to Madrid, red fans to ask for “more women” and, this year, some nominees wear a badge with the message “The short is cinema”.

The initiative, promoted by the main associations of the sector, calls for the creation of "an official body that centralizes and coordinates all the issues of the short film, as well as the annual investment of televisions and platforms of at least 1% destined to the purchase of rights of short films about the project”.

Despite its low visibility since, since 1986, its screening in theaters is no longer required by law, the Spanish short brims with talent and recognition,
