For many people, tipping is completely natural.

But is it really easy to round up card payments, or is it only for the boss?

If everything was fine when you ate in a restaurant or went to the hairdresser, most people add a tip to the bill.

It's not mandatory and always optional, but for many service workers, tipping is a welcome bonus to their wages.

In Germany, an amount of five to ten percent has become standard, but giving more is of course also an option.

No matter how much: no problem at all if you pay in cash.

But what happens if you want to pay the invoice amount with your giro or credit card, despite the Meastro function being off?

Card Payment Tipping: How It's Done

If the food and service were good, the majority of customers rounded up the sum of the bill.

As a rule of thumb, you can also use ten percent of the total as a guide.

That would be a tip of five euros for a bill of 50 euros.

If you pay in cash, the bill is stated, paid and the tip given by the customer goes into an extra pocket in your wallet or apron.

Depending on the location, the tip at the end of the day is divided among the entire staff or kept by individuals.

But what if you want to pay by card?

Then proceed as follows:

In the meantime, in many places you can also pay the tip with the card.

But if you want to be sure that it ends up with the desired staff, you should continue to have cash.

  • In the best case, you pay the required invoice amount with the card and tip the employee in cash.

This also avoids any fees that could be incurred with card payments and reduce the tip.

  • Alternatively, the staff can round up the sum on the card machine by the tip, and the customer pays for both directly with his debit or credit card.

But: In some places it won't work that way.

Either because there is no tip at all.

Or because there is no technical way to book the additional money through the card.

Card Payment Tips: Who Gets It?

The answer to this question must be: “It depends.” The receipt gives a hint.

If the tip amount is listed separately (and without VAT), the mini bonus is intended for the staff.

There is usually no tax on the tip - if it has not been planned in advance in the price.

In general, however, if you want the tip to go to the person who, for example, provided great, cheerful service throughout the evening, you should always tip in cash.

By the way, there are also special tipping rules for the hotel, for the hairdresser as well as for food delivery services.
