Around a fifth of fourth graders cannot read properly, a third fail at spelling: The results of the IQB education trend 2021 were disastrous, in almost all federal states the performance of primary school students dropped sharply.

The Confederation of Employers' Associations (BDA) has now presented a ten-point paper on improving school quality.

The topic is also "of the highest relevance" for employers and for "our entire society and its future viability," says the paper, which comprises ten points.

Among other things, the BDA proposes expanding pre-school quality in day-care centres: »A systematic diagnosis of the language level and binding language support measures based on this are urgently and comprehensively necessary.«

Nationwide minimum level as a goal

In addition, the learning goals agreed by the Conference of Ministers of Education would have to be continuously reviewed and implemented in a binding manner - with a focus on the basic skills German and mathematics.

According to the paper, schools in an unfavorable social situation should receive additional resources.

In order to attract more teachers, it should be made possible for teachers to only teach one subject.

"The economy needs young professionals with a solid basic education," said BDA general manager Steffen Kampeter of the "Welt am Sonntag".

"But all studies on school quality are alarming." The BDA therefore recommends systematic monitoring of school performance.

“Schools need to know: which student is how far along?

The goal must be a nationwide minimum level,” Kampeter demanded.

There is also an urgent need for intensive support for young people with poor starting opportunities.
