The horror script: would you sacrifice your life to save the world? | Israel today

After a series of failures, director M. Nate Schmallan came back to himself - and made one of his best films in recent years • "Knock on the Door" is an apocalyptic horror thriller, which you doubt will buy his ideas - but it's definitely worth you going and watching it

The apocalyptic horror thriller "Knock on the Door" is the best film of M.

Nate Schmallan has been around for years.

Unlike his last films - "Split", "Mr. Glass" and "Time" - which helped him recapture the hearts of his fans and make an impressive comeback after a long series of box office and critical failures (although they were not very successful, to say the least), this time Shmalan is in good form record.

The tension and horror that build up on the screen slowly and efficiently correspond optimally with the events of the real world (epidemics, natural disasters, etc.), and Shmalán demonstrates a complete and impressive control over what is happening (something that, in my opinion, has not happened since the days of "The Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable", the two films that made him to a superstar at the beginning of the millennium).

"Knock on the door" - trailer

Based on a book by Paul Tremblay, "Knock on the Door" tells the story of Andrew and Eric (Jonathan Graf and Ben Eldridge), a couple of gay fathers, vacationing in a secluded cabin in the woods with their adopted daughter Von (the excellent Kristen Coy).

The peace is suddenly broken by four armed strangers - two men and two women - who firmly and with complete seriousness claim that they came to the place in order to save the world.

The way to do this, they claim, is to make the small and loving family sacrifice one of its members.

If they refuse to do so, the apocalypse will occur.

The shocked Andrew and Eric resist, of course, and try to escape with their daughter.

But the four strangers do not give up.

The leader of the group, Leonard (Dave Battista, "Guardians of the Galaxy"), repeatedly explains to them in a patient and empathetic way that they have no real choice, and as the film progresses we realize that he is not joking.

But does he really expect us to take his words seriously?

"Knock on the Door" may not be a great movie, and its ending (which does not match the ending of the book on which it is based) may have a little trouble delivering the expected goods.

But as mentioned, what he does he does properly, and there is no doubt that it works.

The person responsible for this - apart from Schmallan, of course - is Dave Battista, who carries the whole business on his sturdy shoulders and delivers a convincing and soulful performance.

The ex-wrestler continues to prove that he is an excellent and versatile actor who is not afraid of complex and challenging roles, and his terrifying-subtle presence here upgrades the film on several levels, and in my opinion is also the main reason to watch it.

Where is he and where is Dwayne Johnson.
