Berlinale 2023: Ukraine and Sean Penn headline the line-up

The 73rd Berlin International Film Festival, which will take place from February 16 to 26, will present nine films on the life of Ukrainians in times of war, including Superpower directed by the American actor and director.

Third European event by its scale and first on the calendar before Cannes in May and Venice in September, the 73rd edition of the Berlinale, from February 16 to 26, will take place one year after the start of the Russian offensive in Ukraine.

This year, more than ever, being part of the Berlinale means supporting those who struggle to express their ideas, and those who refuse to submit to a conformist version of reality that dictates what can and must be said.

On the program in particular, nine films, mainly documentaries, on the life of Ukrainians in wartime, including

Superpower

by actor and director Sean Penn.

The two-time Oscar-winning American filmmaker (

Harvey Milk

and

Mystic River

) was in Kiev to shoot a documentary when the Russian invasion began on February 24.

It features President Volodymyr Zelensky, who at the time praised his courage.

Iran, where director Jafar Panahi has just been released on bail after seven months in prison, will also have a good place in a Berlinale which aims to be the voice of artists in resistance.

Several films on this country are listed in parallel sections and discussion sessions will focus on the evolution of the protest movement against the regime which has erupted since September.

Franco-Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani is part of the feature film jury, which awards the Golden and Silver Bears.

This jury is headed this year by actress Kristen Stewart, 32, the youngest president in the history of the Festival.

An honorary bear for Steven Spielberg

After years marked by the pandemic, the stars are back on the Berlinale red carpet, observed the director of the European bureau of

American Steven Spielberg will come to present his most autobiographical film (

The Fabelmans

) and will be awarded an Honorary Golden Bear for a career that changed the history of cinema, from

Jaws

to

ET

.

A total of 19 films are in competition, including six works by female directors, to succeed last year's Golden Bear,

The selection makes the big difference between a film about a bodybuilt VTC driver and his "

repressed desires

" (

Manodrome

) with American actor Jesse Eisenberg and the biopic about Austrian poet Ingeborg Bachmann, played by Luxembourg actress, Vicky Krieps .

Three French films are in the running:

Sur l'Adamant

by Nicolas Philibert, documentary filmmaker for

Being and Having

, which this time plunges into the world of psychiatry,

Le grand chariot

by Philippe Garrel, with his three children, Louis, Esther and Léna and

Disco Boy

, by the Italian Giacomo Abbruzzese, on the Foreign Legion, a feature film co-produced mainly by France.



Opening the Festival, an American romantic comedy,

She Came to Me

, carried by one of the main actors of

Games of Thrones

, Peter Dinklage, as well as the Frenchman Tahar Rahim and the American Anne Hathaway.

Oscar-winning British star Helen Mirren will premiere

Golda

, in which she plays Israel's only female prime minister, Golda Meir.



Also on the Berlinale program is a standout documentary about former German tennis champion Boris Becker, released from a British prison in mid-December after serving time for financial offences.

The film was directed by Oscar-winning British filmmaker Alex Gibney.

Berlin is also taking another step towards series and the small screen, with a dedicated competition and a new prize, the Berlinale Series Award, which will decide on February 22 seven works in competition.
