Several people were injured when a man hit them with a pickup truck in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York.

As the AP news agency reported, citing information from the fire department, at least eight people were injured in two places in the incident.

New York City Police Chief Keechant Sewell confirmed to Reuters that eight were injured, including one police officer.

Two people are in critical condition.

How exactly the incident happened is unclear.

Sewell described the driver's actions as a "violent rampage through Brooklyn," but said there was no evidence of "terrorist involvement," according to the AP.

According to reports, the truck had sped through Bay Ridge and struck people on a sidewalk.

A video clip shows the truck narrowly missing a pedestrian on the sidewalk as a police vehicle chases it.

The pedestrian had to dodge the truck to avoid a collision.

Five kilometers away, police were able to stop the truck near a tunnel that runs from Brooklyn to Manhattan.

Police Chief: Suspect in custody

Sewell said one suspect is in custody and police are investigating seven crime scenes.

She did not give any further details.

The incident happened on the same day a federal jury began considering whether to impose the death penalty on Sayfullo Saipov, according to Reuters.

The extremist drove a truck on a bike lane in New York City in 2017, killing eight people.
