With the aim of enhancing safety measures before, during and after the earthquake, the branch of the Order of Engineers in Damascus organized a scientific dialogue workshop on seismic activity, its risks, prediction and engineering safety of buildings and facilities.

Dr. Nadim Al-Ahmad, a professor at the University of Damascus, explained that the earthquake is a natural phenomenon that has multiple geological dimensions that cause destruction to humans and the environment. Engineering standards and soil foundation studies before constructing buildings to resist earthquakes.

The head of the Civil Engineering Committee of the Damascus Branch of the Engineers Syndicate, a member of the Syrian code, Imad Darwish, pointed out that work on the Syrian code was started in 2004, when the Code Committee completed about 20 appendices to this code, in addition to the code for designing buildings to resist earthquakes. The first version was in 2004 and was developed in 2011. And the last developed version is 2022, and we are still striving to develop the code in accordance with all updated information in the world or countries where earthquakes occur frequently.

The head of the Safety, Occupational Health and Disaster Management Committee at the Engineers Syndicate, Damascus Branch, Eng. Adel Dahdal, explained that there are many measures that are taken to mitigate the damage of an earthquake when it occurs, as it is a phenomenon that is light or large and destructive, so we must identify the nature of the earthquake when it occurs because it is like a bell. A warning that we must rely on to find out what the action plan is to correct all the weaknesses and build on the strengths.

For her part, a member of the Council of the Engineers’ Association in Damascus, Engineer Randa Hashish, she explained that the topic of the educational workshop touches on scientific aspects and the procedures required during and before earthquakes occur and on the code for designing buildings to resist earthquakes issued by the Engineers’ Association in Damascus, while the civil structural engineer Helmy Sukkari confirmed that the structures The infrastructure has a special seismic study, as private facilities such as hospitals, fire stations and electricity generation stations should not be affected by earthquakes and they must have a construction study so as not to go out of service.
