Three people were shot dead at the University of Michigan.
The police said on Twitter that five other people had been injured and taken to a hospital.
The suspect is also dead, he is said to have shot himself.
According to police, the man opened fire on the campus in East Lansing, a good 145 kilometers northwest of Detroit.
He shot in a hall of the Berkey Hall building and in another building.
Everyone on the university campus was told to get to safety.
"Run, hide, fight," said the university's first warning to students and employees.
If possible, you should move away from the danger, otherwise entrench yourself.
If both are impossible, one should defend oneself, it was said in explanation.
Several buildings have been evacuated.
The University of Michigan's East Lansing campus is home to more than 50,000 students.
It therefore extends over more than 21 square kilometers.
