This is a raincoat made of waterproof Gabardine fabric, which is actually a textile invented in 1879 by Thomas Burberry (the founder of the old British fashion house).
The Trench Coat became famous during the First World War when it proved to be essential for British officers who desired light and resistant coats for the damp trenches in which they operated, as well as out of a desire to distinguish them from lower-ranking soldiers.
Since then, much water has flowed in the river, and in the worlds of cinema and fashion.
The trench became so common and iconic that it inspired countless imitations and interpretations.

There is no doubt that it will be tempting to go for an innovative design interpretation of the classic cut of the trench coat.
But if you want to invest in an item that will serve you for years to come, it is better to leave it true to the original, ie: midi length, double zipper, belt and side pockets.
At most, experiment with the color palette.
Still, keep it neutral, meaning shades of beige, brown, black, and even gray or dark blue will work just fine.
