The shawarma was an excellent starter. Then the hummus arrived - voila! Food

Following one warm recommendation, David Rosenthal went on a culinary journey in the market in Acre. He tasted a successful shawarma and a divine knapa, but the main target, Abu Elias hummus, was a bit disappointing

A city that is truly magical.

There are people whose world is as narrow as an ant's world.

Take me, for example.

I haven't visited Acre since the early 1980s, four decades, maybe more.

In the coastal plain area, Haifa has always been the northernmost point, everything above it is considered the other side of the mountains of darkness.

Kiryut?

Nahariya?

Thanks, but no thanks.

So what suddenly led me to the northern city?

At the end of January, I happened to come across a ranking by booking.com for the most hospitable cities in Israel.

Acre is in first place, and this is exactly the push I needed.

The fall has fallen, Friday has arrived, my wife and I are starting.

Destination: North.

Small and tasteless.

A sweet opening.

I was already going to go for the falafel, but then my wife, who is exactly where it came from, said "Look, the shawarma here looks delicious"

Of course, along the way I was mainly thinking about how to attack the culinary angle.

Tourism and museums?

Nice, but there are priorities, and food comes first.

"What do you recommend?", I asked a friend from Mikneam who, for me, is the light and the tommy for any site in the north, and he responded unequivocally with "Hummus Sa'id".

So we arrived, parked and walked the shoka.

We immediately encountered Said, without even bothering to look.

The swarms of people led us, but the place was alarmingly bombed.

Judging by the human lake that spilled there, it is not for nothing that it is considered a consensus, but we could not bear the queue and crowding.

we gave up.

At the stand located right in front of us, falafel balls whizzed by that looked delicious.

Hummus Paul

they call the place.

The guy let us taste a ball and it was delicious.

I was already going to go for the falafel, but then my wife, precisely from where it came from, said "look, the shawarma here looks delicious".

I was thinking that if you have a partner who drives you to shawarma you are probably the luckiest person in the world.

It was a wheel of female turkey, a dish costs NIS 35.

Since we didn't plan for this to be our place and thought we'd try another place anyway, we decided to try a half portion (NIS 25).

The bet turned out to be successful - the shawarma was delicious, with its only drawback being a slightly rough cut, but not one that particularly affected the taste.

You should think twice

You can't beat the price of this pita, even if you go back ten years

Fresh, but aggressive.

There are two things we love about hummus - sourness and warmth - but these advantages turned out to be disadvantages

Surprisingly, we already felt relatively full, so we went to walk around and breathe in the attractions of the city.

Two hours later we arrived at the market again.

Some of the restaurants and stalls were already closed, but on Al Jazar Street everything was still bustling.

We decided to choose

hummus Abu Elias (Tony)

.

Friday afternoon, great time to wipe something.

We ordered Mashwasha (NIS 23), labneh (NIS 25), ten falafel balls (NIS 15) and chips (NIS 20).

First came the white plate.

The cheese was fine, although somewhat lumpy and not as runny as you'd expect from an egg white.

The pitas were fresh but stiff and did not invite ideal wiping.

Then came the shuttle.

There are two things we love about hummus - sourness and warmth - but these advantages turned out to be disadvantages, if only because it was all too much.

The chickpeas were tasty, but wrapped in too much sourness and served hot.

When the dish cooled, the hummus was much better, although the sourness still continued to take over and make the taste disappear.

As for the falafel balls, they were small, too spongy and almost tasteless, certainly compared to the excellent falafel ball we tasted at Shamsie's.

And finally, the fries, which were not prepared with exceptional emotion, as the pieces are too thick and not fried enough.

We felt more was possible.

A generous amount of cheese was perfectly blended in the kadaif hairs, and together with the quality ice cream, the perfect taste was created in the mouth

My wife described the meal as "aggressive food", and if in the first few seconds I didn't really understand her intention, then when I thought about it, I couldn't find a more accurate definition.

While the falafel and fries were not up to par, the mashashwa, labneh and pitas were fine, but all had too coarse a texture.

Everything felt a bit like two matches to us.

Hummus Abu Elias, one of the pride of the city, gave us the feeling that with a little more softness in the portions and perhaps also an improvement in the raw materials, this meal would have improved wonders.

This was the stage when we wondered what we would end up with and started walking around the market.

The smell led us to

Bashtawi sweets.

We ordered a knapa with ice cream that is made on the spot.

We didn't have high expectations, both because no one recommended this place to us and also because as residents of the center we don't have too high expectations of Kenapa (there isn't a single fancy place I've come across, not even in Jaffa).

We ordered two dishes with the house ice cream and the party began.

It was one of the best desserts I've tasted in recent years - a generous amount of cheese blended perfectly into the kadaif hairs, and together with the quality ice cream, the perfect taste was created in the mouth.

The price, NIS 30 per piece, belongs more to Tel Aviv, but still, it's not the place where I would save money.

integrity.

So how did it come out?

The KMA index (quantity-price-quality on a scale of 1-10) refers this time to the main destination of our visit - hummus Abu Elias. In total, we blew up for 83 shekels, so there are no problems in the category of quantity and price. Our problem was with the quality - some of the ingredients They were not good enough, others were overdone. The score is 7, disappointing in relation to the potential.

We have reached the end of the journey, and it is impossible to close the corner without a concluding sentence about Acre - every superlative justifies itself.

This city is simply magical.

Where have I been for 40 years?
