Press: broadcasting driven by digital

2023-02-16T18:18:03.486Z

DECRYPTION - The national daily press remains the one that sells the most in digital version, according to the CMPA.

“Whatever the medium, the French have never been so greedy for information.

The trend remains very strong and

the press

proves, year after year, that it is a mass medium”

, analyzes Jean-Paul Dietsch, Deputy Director General of the Alliance for Press and Media Figures (ACPM).

Overall, the circulation of the French press (general public, professional and free) reached 7.3 million copies per day in 2022

,

against 8.1 million a year earlier, according to data released Thursday by the press control body.

On a like-for-like basis, however, the decline was 3%, in line with previous years.

The ACPM, which receives sworn statements from publishers, justifies this difference by a reduction in the number of titles checked to establish its study (some free press titles have, for example, ceased publication, like

CNews

) .

Family by family, it is the regional daily press which represents the largest share of circulation (40%) of newspapers in France, followed by the magazine press (32%), the national daily press (16%), the daily press of the seventh day (6%), the free daily information press (3%), the regional weekly press (2%) and the professional press (1%).

Some 2.5 billion copies of newspapers were thus sold in 2022. Individual digital versions representing almost a quarter of this paid circulation in France, compared to half for individual and carry subscriptions, and the remaining quarter for sales to the number.

In detail, the national daily press remains the one that sells the most in digital version (68%), unlike the regional daily press, the bulk of whose sales are made in paper format (85%), as is the magazine press. (79%).

For its part, France's paid circulation of Le

Figaro

increased by 1.2% last year, to 351,379 copies.

In recent months, press publishers have had to deal with soaring paper prices (per tonne rising from 400 to 1,000 euros), coupled with the increase in energy prices.

This more fragile context has prompted a large number of press owners to accelerate the transformation of their economic model, making digital subscriptions the mother of all battles.

In particular the magazine market (news magazines, women's magazines, etc.), where the migration of distribution to digital has been slower in recent years.

“Digital versions are undeniably becoming a driving force for press distribution,”

comments Jean-Paul Dietsch.

Titles that are not, or are very little, available on web channels naturally suffer a little more from the structural decline in paper sales.

Dynamic weekend supplements

The use of digital press media thus continued to grow in 2022. The sites and applications recorded more than 25 billion visits, with 8 out of 10 visits made from a mobile device.

The ACPM will publish its Press Observatory

on April 20

, with a more detailed review of 2022 circulation in France.

Already, several trends are emerging within press families.

Daily newspaper supplements, such as Le

Figaro Magazine, M Le Magazine

du

Monde

or

L'Équipe Le Magazine

, for example, have seen their distribution increase from one year to the next.

While the trends for TV magazines, those from the women's-fashion-beauty universe or the weekly titles of the celebrity press are rather down, according to the magazine press data available on the CMPA website.

A few days ago, the organization published a white paper on press commitments for the environment.
