A young man was run over and fatally injured on Autobahn 1 near Hagen.

The 20-year-old from Münster had rushed to help a driver from Hagen, 24, who had apparently stopped on the hard shoulder due to a lack of fuel, the police said.

Shortly thereafter, the woman's dog broke free and ran onto the road.

The 20-year-old tried to catch the animal, was hit by the car of a 29-year-old and thrown from the middle onto the left lane.

According to the police, another car ran over him there.

He died at the scene of the accident.

According to the information, emergency chaplains from the fire brigade were also used to look after those involved in the accident and witnesses.

Several people were taken to the hospital with a shock, the WDR reported.

The dog was also injured.

After the tragic accident late Thursday evening, the A1 in the direction of Cologne between Westhofener Kreuz and Hagen-Nord was closed until Friday morning.
