The actor grew up in a Jewish home and previously described his mother in an interview as a "violent mother".
He made his first experiences with comedy when he tried to make his mother laugh in order to improve her mood and prevent her from hitting him or his brother.
He began his career as a stand-up comedian, and later made the transition to the small and big screen.
In 1990, he began portraying the character of the detective with whom he was most identified in the series "Murder from Red to Black", and then continued with his character in the series "Law and Order", in which he played for 22 consecutive seasons until his retirement from acting at the age of 71.
