A man died after his penis rotted when a routine medical procedure went horribly wrong.

The 64-year-old, whose name remains confidential, went to the hospital to have a catheter inserted to help him urinate after a stroke that left him with limited bladder control.

Ten days later, the man returned to the hospital in Tunisia with fever, pain and discoloration of his penis, which turned black.

The doctors discovered that the tip of the patient's penis was "compressed" and "gangrenous", meaning it had rotted away.

His blood contained high levels of white blood cells - a sign that his body was trying to fight the infection - so he was given antibiotics.

Later tests revealed that he had contracted a bacteria called Klebsiella pneumoniae, a type of bacteria that can sometimes infect hospital patients.

Doctors tried to save the man's life by removing the infected penis, but unfortunately he died of sepsis.

His shocking case was first reported in the Journal of Medical Case Reports.

Sepsis (sepsis) is a life-threatening condition caused by an infection and can get out of control in a short time.

Sepsis occurs when the body wages an all-out fight against some kind of infection, and inflammation occurs throughout the body.

In such a situation, the body goes through a series of changes and upheavals, and blood clots and leaks may form in blood vessels that limit the blood supply to the organs.

As a result, the blood pressure drops, many organs may collapse and the heart may also be damaged.

In some cases, like the current one, it can also end in death.

Gangrene is necrosis of tissues or organs in the human body.

The appearance of the necrosis and its location vary according to the various factors.

"Although control was achieved with aggressive debridement" - that is, tissue removal - "careful wound care and broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy, the patient died due to septic shock," the report states, "the time between diagnosis and treatment greatly affects morbidity and mortality, and it can rapidly progress to sepsis. This is why it remains a life-threatening disease."
