The aviation magazine Air Transport World (ATW) selected American Airlines as the Eco-Airline of 2023. The award marks the recognition of the company's progress towards its sustainability goals.
Following the company's extensive fleet renewal and significant investments in sustainable fuel, ATW recognized American Airlines' efforts to become an airline with a more fuel-efficient fleet increasingly powered by low-carbon fuels and new technology.
Ongoing fleet renewal efforts have helped American Airlines improve fuel efficiency by more than 10% since 2013, which has helped save 1.9 billion gallons of fuel and prevented 19 million tons of carbon dioxide.
American Airlines today leads the industry in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) consumption and has used 2 million gallons of SAF in 2022. American Airlines' SAF agreements bring the airline's total low-carbon fuel commitments to more than 620 million gallons.
American Airlines is also the first US airline to make two direct investments focused on the development of both hydrogen-electric propulsion technology and the future of hydrogen distribution logistics.

American Airlines was the first airline in the world to receive recognition from the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) for its carbon emission reduction targets.
The company's goal is to reduce its carbon emissions by 45% by 2035, compared to 2019.
The airline also appeared in the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index in 2022 for the second year in a row, improving its score by more than 20% year over year.
The ATW Awards are selected by a panel of editors and analysts at ATW, Routes, Aviation Week and CAPA, who recognize airline excellence and are a coveted achievement in the air transportation industry.
American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said: "American Airlines actively integrates sustainability at every level of our business, from the fuel we buy to the food we serve to our customers.
As the ecological airline of the year, we will continue to lead the industry in this field."
