This year there are again tomato varieties on the market that are worth trying to grow.

They are piebald, heart-shaped or particularly robust.

And all very aromatic.

Without question, home-grown tomatoes must of course taste excellent and have an intense aroma.

Provided that this is the case, the varieties of the 2022/2023 season also have other qualities.

Whether bright colors from red-yellow to amber, small wild tomatoes or particularly strong varieties that are resistant to brown and late blight - the range is large.

Of course, there are also trends in tomatoes.

Even if some varieties of rarity collectors have been tracked down and tested earlier, it still takes time before they are approved in the trade and their seeds become more and more popular.

With a huge selection, it's easy to lose track, so here are some tips for some extravagant strains.

Some new tomato varieties, well-known newcomers and their special features:

  • 'Anacoeur': a heart-shaped oxheart tomato that is also flamed yellow-red in the flesh.

Will weigh up to 300 grams.

  • 'Candy Sweet Icicle': plum-sized early red variety with green and yellow stripes.

    An ideal sweet salad tomato.

  • 'Cherry accordion': With its look reminiscent of a folded accordion, this rediscovery with its balanced sweet and sour aroma has rightly become very popular.

  • 'Dwarf Antho Pink Panther': exotic red bush tomato from the USA with blue and yellow shades.

Resistant to the main tomato diseases.

  • 'Mila': a very unusual bulb-shaped orange variety that contains few seeds and is ideal for preserving.

  • 'Rose Crush PhR F1': inconspicuous beefsteak tomato.

The seed-poor new breed is very resistant to late blight and late blight.

  • 'Wildtomate Auranthiacum': a high yielding yellow cherry tomato with up to 100 sweet fruits per truss.

  • 'Whippersnapper': a pink bush tomato that grows up to 40 centimeters high and is known in England as the 'Three Cheese Tall'.

Ideal as a traffic light tomato in a tub, also for the balcony.

Late February is a good time to start growing tomatoes from seed if you have a greenhouse.

If you want to plant the tomatoes on the balcony or in the field, you should wait until mid-March before sowing or buy young plants at a later date.
