    Is eating poppy seeds dangerous?

Poppy seeds are the ripe seeds of the

    opium poppy

    , which

    are often used in

    baking and cooking .

    Opium and its alkaloids, including

    morphine

(a powerful painkiller), can be obtained

    from the same plant

    .

    Poppy seeds

    can also

contain very small amounts of these alkaloids.

Excessive consumption of poppy seeds containing morphine can lead to respiratory and circulatory problems, dizziness and nausea.

The recommendation of the BfR (Federal Institute for Risk Assessment) is therefore not to consume more than 20 grams of poppy seeds a day.

The morphine content can be determined by thoroughly washing the poppy seeds with clear water and heating them, e.g.

    e.g. when baking or searing.

    Other countries take

    a more critical

    view of this

    and ban poppy seeds completely.

In Taiwan, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, poppy seeds are considered a

    drug

and should therefore not be found in your hand luggage.
