This morning (Monday) a report was received from a carcass fisherman about a relatively fresh common whale.
The personnel of the Marine Unit of the Nature and Parks Authority, with the assistance of the control units and the fighters of the Fin Unit of the Sea Arm at the Ashdod base, followed the progress of the carcass to the beach in order to try to ensure that it was released into Israeli territory for inspection and research purposes.
As of now, the carcass has already washed ashore in Israel in a closed military area.
Later, samples are expected to be taken and a decision will be made regarding the further treatment and testing of the carcass.
This is the second common leviathan carcass released to Israel, the previous incident happened on 2/18/2021.

This is a relatively rare event, usually young individuals arrive in our area.
It is the second largest animal after the blue whale in the world.
Common leviathan is common in the western Mediterranean but rare in the eastern basin.
