First and foremost, forget about sitting on the wing of the plane.

We will also immediately explain why, but first we will start from the basics: people reserve one or another seat on a plane for a variety of reasons.

There are those who prefer more space for their legs, others would prefer to watch the view from the window and there are those who would like to sit at the front of the plane, to get out of it as quickly as possible after landing.

But is there a seat that can be the safest in the (very rare) case of a crash?

This is the best place to sit in order to survive a plane crash.

These are the two most important things to remember when choosing a seat on a plane.

The middle seat: Notorious - but safe

Aviation expert Doug Drury, who was interviewed for an article on the subject on the New York Post website, explains that statistically, the middle seat - notorious among passengers - is the safest in the event of a crash.

"The middle seats are safer than the window seats or the aisle seats, thanks to the fact that on both sides of them sit people who are a buffer," he explains.

When asked which are the safest places on the plane, Drury points out that sitting in the emergency aisle guarantees the fastest exit from the plane in case of an emergency - as long as there is no fire on that side.

However, not all emergency exits are "born equal".

"The wings of the plane store fuel, which immediately eliminates the seats in the emergency exits located in the middle of the plane. As for the emergency exits at the front of the plane - in the event of a crash, this area of the plane absorbs most of the impact. Thus, we are left with the seats next to the emergency exits in the back of the plane." Drury explains.

Size matters

Of course, the seat that will be considered the safest varies slightly depending on the type of aircraft and its size, but the physics remains similar for all aircraft.

"In general, it can be said that since large airplanes have more structural 'material', they will have resistance to the pressures that exist at high altitude. This also means that they may provide additional protection in emergency situations. However, it all depends of course on the nature of the impact."

Last year, 229 people were killed in 12 aviation disasters around the world.

One of them occurred last March, when a China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737-800 crashed, killing 123 passengers and nine crew members.

But it is important to remember that plane crashes are considered relatively rare.

According to calculations made by the National Safety Council in the United States, the chance of being killed in a plane crash is 1 in 205,552.

This is compared to 1 in 102 when it comes to road accidents.
