ROME - Record tourism for Carnival 2023. There are five million visitors to the initiatives of the key week, destined to end tomorrow, Shrove Tuesday.

With two million overnight stays in paid structures, hotels and Bed and Breakfasts are the vast majority.

For a total turnover close to three billion.

This was estimated by a survey by Cna Turismo e Commercio conducted among associates from all over Italy that ANSA publishes in preview.

Another comforting figure is the massive presence of foreign holidaymakers in a traditionally low tourist month such as February.

There will be around 500,000 citizens who have come to Italy from across the border to enjoy these authentically popular events and represent the economic engine of the period: they alone guarantee half of the overnight stays booked, one million out of the two million in total.

It is Venice with its historic Carnival that plays the lion's share in terms of attendance and turnover, confirming itself as one of the world capitals of events, strong in roots that go back over the centuries already sung by Carlo Goldoni.

Followed by a luxury bridesmaid such as Viareggio with its allegorical floats.

In third place is Ivrea, especially for the culminating moment, the Battle of the Oranges, an ancient episode that has marked its history.

But fascinating events and historical Carnivals are held in every part of Italy, from Fano to Putignano, from Acireale to Cento.
