One of the 18 studies, which included only eight participants, seven of whom were men, found that an average of 130 calories were burned during sex.
Sex was considered 'significant physical activity' in a 2013 study published in Plos One, which looked at the energy expenditure of healthy young people during sex and compared it to running on a treadmill.
Researchers from the University of Quebec in Canada found that couples in their early 20s burn between 69 and 100 calories in their average sex session.
This is equal to 3.6 calories per minute.
