Every bit of green counts? Activists of the "last generation" have broken away from this principle in front of the Berlin Chancellery. They used the saw – to make “destruction visible in the middle of Berlin”.

Climate protection demonstrators felled a small tree in front of the Chancellery in Berlin.

The police were on duty because of the activists at Olaf Scholz's official residence, as a spokesman said.

The protest group »Last Generation« wrote on Twitter about the campaign: »Economy and politics are sawing off the branches on which civilization is sitting.

We make this destruction visible in the middle of Berlin.«

Seven charges against Berlin activists

The group "Last Generation" was formed after a hunger strike for the climate in Berlin and calls for more efforts to protect the climate.

Since the beginning of 2022, it has been blocking freeway exits and other roads in many cities - with activists sitting on the roadways, sticking their hands to the asphalt there or tipping out concrete.

According to the latest information from the Senate, the Berlin public prosecutor's office has so far applied for 511 penal orders against demonstrators and brought seven charges.

According to the police, it was initially still unclear how the action on Tuesday was determined.

According to the "Berliner Morgenpost", investigations are being examined either because of violations of the Nature Conservation Act or the Green Space Protection Act.

Other nature and environmental protection organizations think little of the tree felling campaign.

"The symbolism," according to a Berlin BUND spokeswoman for the "Morgenpost", will again lead to discussions "that distract from what is actually going on".

The »last generation« seems unimpressed by this – and is already thinking ahead.

On Twitter, she is looking for people with a truck driver's license: "Does anyone in this readership happen to have a driver's license for larger vehicles and would like to use the skills for the survival of all of us?" they wrote.

What they intend to do with it is still unclear.
