Amancio Amaro, a legendary Real Madrid striker of the 1960s and 1970s, has died at the age of 83, the club has announced.
"Real Madrid, its president and management are deeply sorry for the loss of Amancio Amaro, honorary president of Real Madrid, one of the great legends of our club and of world football," the Madrid club recalled in a statement.
"Amancio was the leader of Real Madrid following the one led by Paco Gento, of the five consecutive European Cups", won between 1956 and 1960, "and he represents the values that have made the history of our club".
Arrived in 1962 from Deportivo La Coruña, the striker spent 14 seasons with the Madrid club.
With the Real Madrid shirt he won nine Spanish championships, three Spanish Cups and a European Cup in 1966. He was top scorer in the Spanish league twice.
Nicknamed "the Sorcerer" (El Brujo), Amaro played 42 times for the Spanish national team with which he won the European Nations Championship in 1964.
