Who were the two Argentines who died in an avalanche in Canada

2023-02-21T00:43:12.464Z

Manuel Sáenz and Jerónimo Regina had traveled to ski in Calgary and were buried by the landslide. Josué Alonso survived.

On Thursday, a group of six men vacationing in Canada were out snowboarding and skiing, when the unexpected happened: a

100-meter-wide mass of snow

fell in their path.

The crash dragged several of them through stone jumps and trees, causing severe injuries.

One man was miraculously saved and two others lost their lives.

All those affected had Argentine passports.

The deceased were named

Manuel Sáenz and Jerónimo Regina

.

They were from City Bell and Lobos, respectively.

Both left an important mark in their communities.

The

survivor is Josué Alonso

, from Tres Arroyos.

Social networks were filled with messages of sadness, strength and encouragement.

Sáenz was a fan of adventure.

His life passed between one side and the other of the Andes Mountains, where he shared his life and his work as a coach.

He was 37 years old, he was the husband of Javiera and the father of a child.

Those who knew and loved him still haven't finished assimilating the loss.

This is the case of Alejandra Saavedra González, who uploaded an emotional text to Facebook, where she affectionately says goodbye to "Manucín".

"You supported thousands of people who are suffering from your departure today, it only comforts me that your soul was not for this world. I hope that one day we will see each other again, dear friend,"

the woman wrote.

And she finished:

"This is not a goodbye, but a 'see you forever'".

Carla Labra Alarcón, Manuel's friend and student, is the author of another of the many emotional greetings.

"You're going to travel to the stars and you'll be able to look at the whole world

," she reflected.

She accompanied her words with different photos that show Manuel doing what she liked the most.

Clarín

contacted the young woman, who works in an automotive company and has a gastronomic venture in Conchalí, a commune belonging to the north of Santiago de Chile.

She assures that, as a personal transformation coach and friend, Manuel helped her to empower herself, to break old chains of violence and to feel like the mistress of her destiny: or, as he liked to say, "the protagonist of her own work ".

"

The achievements that I have as a woman, I owe in large part to his support.

He was inspiring, and he left a mark, even on someone who knew him for a few hours," says Carla.

They were five years of a journey together, which led her to feel Manuel as part of her family.

"It is difficult to lose a race, but not playing it is worse" and "if there is a goal and the intention is 100%, the mechanisms are infinite" represent some of the phrases that marked Carla.

"His departure from this plane makes us reflect on the circle of life," adds the woman, sobbing in her throat.

She defines Manuel as an

adventurer

, an inspiring being, with a contagious smile.

Last Saturday, more than 200 students met by Zoom to remember anecdotes and the gift that knowing him meant.

Some defined it as a light;

others, like a star.

His transience does not matter: he taught to explode

every day as if he were the only one

and he did so.

The collective memories did not end there.

Manuel had thousands of students from different latitudes, but a large part of his heart was in Chile.

Not coincidentally, on Sunday afternoon, many gathered in the Parque Araucano, in Santiago, to bid him farewell, with songs and joy, in the midst of sadness.

Regina

, the second to fall in the terrible incident, led a very different life from Manuel's: but both share the affection they aroused in people and the emptiness they left.

All of Lobos is in mourning, as shown by the local media.

The son of two beloved local members - the late Buby Regina and the retired teacher Eleonora Raschia - he was a tradesman.

In addition, he was a former soccer player for the Provincial club and the Athletic club, where he made lasting friendships.

Athletic recalled Jerónimo's time on the pitches on their social networks.

"Bye Jero, what a terrible loss... the most beautiful memories since I was little, my most sincere condolences to the whole family, we will see each other again, dear friend...", wrote

a user on Facebook.

Another added: "Jero dear, I keep that beautiful memory of that unforgettable trip to Río Negro, with category 82. I can't believe it. Huge hug for your old lady and your brother. May you rest in peace, my beautiful madman."

Neighbors, other merchants and more friends added their fraternal and eternal greeting.

Also some from the town of Roque Pérez, where he was looking for orders.

"Jerónimo participated in this activity that he was passionate about, along with his friend and also Carlitos Rangone from Lobo. (...) We embrace with all our affection this dear family hit by unspeakable pain," they reported from the city's

Channel

He was buried an hour under the snow and survived

Alonso is injured, but he is lucky: he is the third Argentine surprised by the tragedy, but he lived to tell what happened.

This experienced 35-year-old skier was buried in the avalanche, with only his head on the surface.

He stayed under snow for an hour.

He was saved because he was wearing a device on his clothing that is activated during emergencies and allows rescuers to find lost skiers

.

Finally, he was found by a German tourist who had joined the search.

He is now admitted to a clinic in Calgary, Canada, with multiple fractures of the tibia, fibula and pelvis, along with other injuries.

He is in the company of three friends who also survived and receives the invaluable support of his girlfriend, who traveled to the north country after learning of the accident.

Alonso underwent a successful operation on Saturday and the doctors continue to carry out studies.

The man works in a company linked to agricultural activity, and frequently travels to ski resorts in Argentina and the world.
