Eric Lartigau, at the helm of the César evening: “We will try to be elegant, free, curious, sparkling”

2023-02-22T11:56:08.490Z

The meeting place for French cinema continues to evolve. For the first time, the director, Éric Lartigau, is in charge of the evening.

A first at the Césars: the ceremony will be co-presented this year by a dozen personalities – including Jamel Debbouze, Leïla Bekhti, Emmanuelle Devos, Alex Lutz, Raphaël Personnaz – who will take turns on the Olympia stage on February 24.

To stage this merry troupe and orchestrate this evening chaired by Tahar Rahim, the Académie des César, in partnership with Canal+, called on Éric Lartigau, the director of La Famille Bélier.

– What was your reaction when you were asked to orchestrate the Cesar ceremony?

Éric Lartigau.–

I was in the office of Maxime Saada

(the general manager of the Canal+ Group, editor's note)

and his enthusiasm made me accept the proposal instantly.

It was only when I left that I realized the work that awaited me!

What does your role consist of?

As artistic director of the evening, my role is to coordinate the music, sets, texts and sketches of the presenters.

Our desires for this 48th edition?

Promote team spirit and good humor.

To do this, we are going to try to elevate ourselves, to be elegant, free, curious, sparkling and to surprise the public with beautiful cinematic moments, such as the awarding of the Honorary Cesar to David Fincher by Virginie Efira.

Did you select the group of presenters yourself?

It was a collective work.

In the end, we are very happy that these actors, actresses and comedians agreed to present the ceremony: the task impresses more than one!

This heterogeneous group represents what I have always defended in my cinema and as a spectator: the diversity of genres.

I like dramas as much as comedies or romantic comedies.

We must stop compartmentalizing the genres of cinema: all have their place within this art.

What is your view of the Caesars mutation?

Total parity within the Academy was obviously important;

it was time for everyone to be represented.

Afterwards, the films will always take precedence for me, whether they are made by a man or a woman.

What are your greatest memories of the Césars?

The César given to Annie Girardot in 1996. I had passed her in the street the same afternoon, she had seemed to me very fragile behind her big glasses, all curled up on herself.

Seeing her then on the stage of the Césars and hearing her poignant speech (“I don’t know if French cinema missed me, but French cinema missed me. Madly, desperately, painfully”) tore me apart. .

I was in tears.

How did you feel when Louane, the actress in your film

La Famille Bélier

received the César for best female hope?

It was a suspended moment.

I was very happy for her, because it is an ultimate reward.

The César for Most Promising Actor is one of the finest, it embodies the future of cinema.

The 48th Césars ceremony will take place on February 24 at the Olympia, in Paris, and will be broadcast at 8:45 p.m. unencrypted and live on Canal+.
