The rivalry between the Beatles and the Rolling Stones has lasted since the 1960s. Now Paul McCartney plays bass on a Stones song. Recently he had described them as a "blues cover band".

The Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney have collaborated on a song that will feature on the rock band's forthcoming album.

This was confirmed by a PR man for the Rolling Stones on Wednesday.

Earlier, US industry publication Variety reported that the former Beatle recorded bass tracks "for an upcoming Rolling Stones project led by Andrew Watt."

Watt was named Producer of the Year at the 2021 Grammys.

The 32-year-old received the award for recordings with Dua Lipa and Miley Cyrus, but also with Black Sabbath veteran Ozzy Osbourne.

The Variety report said the recording sessions had recently taken place in Los Angeles.

In addition, McCartney's former bandmate Ringo Starr "is intended as a guest musician for the album, which has not yet been officially announced".

When asked by Reuters, the Rolling Stones spokesman confirmed McCartney was guesting on bass on a song for the album, which will be released later this year.

He said Ringo Starr was not involved.

The Beatles and the Stones were often compared to each other during their playing days together in the 1960s: one from the north of England, the other from London;

some family-friendly, others rebellious;

some pop, others rock.

In 2021, Paul McCartney described the Rolling Stones as a “blues cover band” in an interview: “I'm not sure I should say that, but they're a blues cover band, the Stones are something like that.

I think our claim was different.«

Beatles colleague John Lennon has also been reported to gossip about fellow Rolling Stones musicians.

"Mick Jagger is a joke," he said in a 1970 interview with Jann S. Wenner, the founder and editor of the American Rolling Stone magazine.

Last month, Stones guitarist Keith Richards told fans in a video message on social media that "new music is on the way."

The new album would be the first since the death of drummer Charlie Watts in 2021.
