ChatGPT at school: the teachers' plan to prevent it from being another 'Bum's Corner'

2023-02-23T09:20:17.977Z

Referents of education raise the challenges imposed by artificial intelligence in the classroom. And they explain how to deal with and live with these tools.

Technology challenges traditional teaching models.

Google did it 20 years ago with its search engine.

In 2023, the new tool designed by the artificial intelligence startup OpenAI convulsed the start of the school year.

It's called

Generative Pretrained Chat

(ChatGPT) and it launched in December of last year.

It reached its first million users in just

5 days

.

It is a software application (chat.openai.com), a messaging system that simulates a conversation with automatic responses using natural language.

It works as a kind of open "virtual assistant" providing

accurate and helpful answers

to questions asked by users in multiple languages.

Máximo Roggero's Generation (17) has already incorporated this tool into their daily lives.

The secondary student from the Santa Rosa de Lima school is convinced that AI can be the most fun and intelligent way to learn at school.

“CHATGPT serves to resolve doubts and to expand the knowledge given in class.

I hope teachers also facilitate its use in the classroom.

I think it offers an ideal way to study because it is very much like a “game”, but with real and serious content.

I myself applied it in a practical case to demonstrate the political bias of AI ”, he tells

Clarín

.

Máximo Roggero (17) is a high school student and already knows ChatGPT.

He will use this tool at school,

Regarding its benefits, he mentions: "It can change the class dynamics because it allows personalizing the learning of each student so that each one can focus specifically on what generates the most interest."

The challenges of ChatGPT

ChatGPT marks a turning point.

When he puts knowledge and learning at the center of the scene, he questions us about

new teaching formats

.

"With the irruption of the Internet in the classroom, educators find ourselves with the challenge of developing in our students capacities and strategies so that they can

select, evaluate and validate the sources of information

provided by search engines. These new disruptive technologies, based in AI generate even more ambitious challenges", says Mario Cwi, Training Director of ORT Argentina, in dialogue with

Clarín

.

And he points out: "Teachers need to develop new teaching strategies aimed at enabling students to generate analysis criteria that favor the construction of

authentic and significant knowledge

, based on these automatic conversations."

For this reason, from the Educational Department of ORT Argentina, strategies were established aimed at students acquiring skills to live, work and continue studying in a world crossed by AI.

"The popularization of AI platforms trained to generate texts, answer questions, and establish automated dialogues constitute

a challenge and an opportunity

to deepen our educational model," Cwi stresses.

For Manuel Álvarez Trongé, President of Educar 2050, it poses enormous challenges of human analysis of their responses and their processing.

Which is it?

"The dependence on technology and the increase in the gap

, accuracy and quality of information

, adaptation to different levels of learning and limitations in practical learning," he lists.

“The exclusive use of the ChatGPT could limit the ability of students to develop social skills, such as communication, empathy and collaboration.

In addition, education is universalizing and the use of technology is not the same for children from the most vulnerable homes ”, she expands.

Another great challenge, mentions Silvina del Pópolo, director of Educational Quality Planning, of the General Directorate of Schools of Mendoza, is being able to incorporate tools of daily life with a pedagogical sense.

“ChatGPT comes to remove the focus from the content and put it in the application of the content.

The challenge for teachers will be to see that

it is used ethically

and that through the tool students can

develop creative and critical thinking

”, says Laura Lewin, teacher educator and TEDx speaker.

educational revolution

“The school we know will change.

The educational policy system must

review the theoretical frameworks

in which new and current teachers are trained and how management teams will process these changes.

The challenge is in the attitudinal: to evaluate how students behave with this new reality and

guide them in the development of a critical spirit

”, reflects Martín Zurita, executive secretary of the Association of Private Education Institutes of the Province of Buenos Aires (AIEPBA). .

New technologies should be allies of teaching, according to experts.

And Juan Segura, consultant and CEO of Circusedu, completes: “ChatGPT

brings resolved

work instructions within the classroom, which forces us to think about new roles and designs.

The teacher as an actor transmitting content is challenged and

must review his role

, approach and usefulness for the process.

The biggest challenge of the education system is cultural”.

How to incorporate this technology in school?

"It is impossible to imagine nurturing our schools of tools in the 21st century, if many are going through difficulties of the 20th century, and even of the 19th century," defines Nicolás Trotta, former Minister of Education of the Nation, when asked by

Clarín

.

And he develops: “It can be incorporated into the classroom with a comprehensive strategy that includes the training of teachers and students in the effective use of the tool.

In addition, it is important to assess the quality of the information provided by the platform and ensure that it is adapted to the needs and level of knowledge of the students."

Another key point that he mentions is the implementation of policies and security measures to protect data privacy.

"You have to make sure that students don't become

dependent on technology

and that they continue to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills," he adds.

Daniela Leiva, a history teacher, who was distinguished by

Clarín

among the 13 best teachers of 2013, warns that in Argentina there is a digital educational gap with a human face, which detracts from rights.

From the Technology Team of the General Directorate of Education and Culture of Buenos Aires (DGCyE) they also observe that ChatGPT does not pose a critical or ideological position

by itself,

but limits itself to responding based on the parameters with which it was trained.

“It can be interesting to take advantage of this dynamic to propose different spheres of analysis, on the same topic.

Teacher mediation

is

key in this exercise”, they suggest.

“This is a point of educational policy that has a lot to do with the planning that the Federal Council of Education must do with the 24 ministries of education in the provinces.

The great Argentine problem is

connectivity and social differences in access

, which is a broader problem for our education.

In an electoral year, this type of challenge should help place Argentine Education as an absolute national priority”, Trongé analyzes.

For his part, Alejandro Finocchiaro, national deputy, former Minister of Education of the PBA and the Nation, questions: “Schools must incorporate the logic that dominates the creation and circulation of content.

They must teach to think.

ChatGPT, like search engines, simplifies the approach to deep knowledge.

There are many educational dynamics, such as the flipped classroom, that can use tools of this type, but the educational process cannot do without good teachers or the school”.

Can it generate a new culture of learning?

From Educar 2050 they define ChatGPT as

an ally that must be learned to manage

.

They consider it to be a transformative potential for various aspects of teaching and learning, but that does not mean that it can replace teachers who are vital for interaction and emotional support.

“ChatGPT can help create a new learning culture more focused on reflection and a transdisciplinary approach, but it cannot do it on its own”, Segura says.

On this point, Finocchiaro opines: "The truly disruptive thing in Argentine education today is

learning to read and communicate

. Chat GPT can help solve practical work, but students will never develop the objectives of true education if they fail to understand the premises of a problem".

For Lewin, the secret is to abandon the format of factual questions (data and facts) in class and start working with

other types of skills

that encourage students to reflect, substantiate, justify, compare and debate.

For this reason, Trotta points out that ChatGPT has the potential to generate a new culture of learning by allowing access to information in real time and by fostering curiosity and self-directed learning.

In addition, it can stimulate collaboration and knowledge sharing on a global level.

“The key is that they learn to recognize and distinguish chat content from human production.

If the way of teaching and evaluating does not change, the students will be

mere "copiers"

who do not learn or elaborate.

The challenge is to integrate it”, concludes Maritchu Seitún, psychologist and teacher.
