Reserved for creators snubbed by the Césars, the Cleopatra Prize crowns Alice Diop and Rebecca Zlotowski

The event was organized by the magazine Causette in reaction to the very masculine nominations for the most prestigious prize in French cinema.

The women's magazine announced Thursday the two winners of its Cléopâtre prize, launched in January in reaction to the overwhelmingly male selection of the 48th edition of the Césars.

Filmmaker Rebecca Zlotowski won the editorial award for

Les enfants des autres

, while the audience award went to Alice Diop, distinguished for her film

Saint-Omer

.

Nearly 1,000 online votes decided after two weeks between the six filmmakers in the running for the audience award.

Apart from the two winners, the nominated directors were Alice Winocour (

Revoir Paris

), Charlotte Le Bon (

Falcon Lake

), Blandine Lenoir (

Annie Colère

) and Patricia Mazuy (

Bowling Saturne

).

“Political and humorous approach”

The Cléopâtre prize was organized by the editorial staff of

Causette

following an ironic remark shared by EELV deputy Marie-Charlotte Garin.

“I propose that we stop the Caesars and that we mount the Cleopatras”

, had proposed the chosen one on Twitter, on January 25.

In tribute to her idea, Marie-Charlotte Garin was named honorary president of the prize set up by

According to its organizers, the Cleopatra Prize is part of a

"political and humorous approach"

which intends to raise awareness of the Académie des César and

"highlight the condition of women in French cinema",

in the manner of the Alice Guy Prize, organized since 2018.

The 2023 edition of the Césars, whose ceremony will be held on Friday, caused a wave of indignation last month, when the list of nominations revealed that the five filmmakers in the running for the prize for the best realization were men.
