'Momias': from Tadeo Jones to a pop Nefertiti against the looting of treasures

The new film by the team from the famous Spanish animated saga travels from Egypt to London and turns an archaeologist into the bad guy in history


The fascination for Egypt, the pharaohs, archeology and travel through time has a new heroine in Nefer, the pop Nefertiti from

Mummies,

the children's animated film created by part of the team of

Tadeo Jones,

that clumsy imitator from Indiana Jones protagonist of one of the most successful sagas in the history of Spanish cinema.

The already veteran adventurer is taken over from the afterlife, where the mummy Nefer leads a gang that lives happily among the dead.

Thut, who was a charioteer in another life, his little brother and their pet, a cute baby crocodile mummy named Croc, complete the troupe

of

this entertaining and very well made animated film that gracefully exploits the pharaonic iconography: gold, blue and mortuary bandages turned into glamorous gloves and dresses.

Mummies

is an action film, with chariot races à la

Ben-Hur;

a musical, with London's West End as its setting;

a story of adventure and travel, with a panoramic view of London that includes tributes to The Beatles' rooftop concert or the emblematic Harrod's department store;

and a romantic comedy between Nefer and Thur.

Its main characters, well-defined with few brushstrokes, are designed for children, but at the same time respond to a curious generational crossover in which little Nefer dances to an eighties

from The Bangles, or in which the villain of the story, a British archaeologist —Lord Carnaby— obsessed with Egyptian treasures, has the mobile tone when his castrating mother calls the famous screeching of wind instruments that Bernard Herrmann created for

These are some of the winks (there are many more to hunt) that

Mummies

offers the adult viewer without getting too entangled in references incomprehensible to his natural audience.

If Tadeo Jones, the character who was born in 2004, parodied the figure of Indiana Jones,

Mummies

humanizes Egyptology.

And that includes the mummy-crocodile, inspired by an embalmed baby of this animal in the British Museum.
