In Schermbeck, in the Westphalian district of Wesel, the owner of a pick-up climbed onto his stolen truck in a film-worthy action and was on the loading area when the thief escaped.
It ended in a tree - and with an arrest.
The police announced on Friday.
The 40-year-old left the car key in the car on Friday while he wanted to hang up a trailer.
In the meantime, the thief got into the driver's seat and drove off - according to the police, the owner managed to grab the handle of the loading area and pulled himself up while driving.
The thief was not particularly impressed and, according to the 40-year-old, accelerated to around 70 kilometers per hour.
Eventually, the thief rammed into another car, took the car off the road, hit a lamppost and then head-on into a tree.
Police say he wanted to run away.
But passers-by stopped him.
The 39-year-old thief was arrested.
The vehicle owner flew off the loading area in the accident.
He and the 32-year-old woman at the wheel of the rammed car were slightly injured.
The pick-up was a total loss.
