Vaccines or natural immunity: what weighed more in the abrupt drop in deaths from Covid

2023-02-24T10:15:01.640Z

The Lancet gave an answer to that question. And official figures indicate how much the total deaths fell versus those vaccinated. But is it possible to separate one thing from the other?

Covid deaths

are

steadily declining.

The part of last Monday reported

10 deaths

in a week.

If the average of the last year is taken, the account gives

17 per day

.

From March 3, 2020 -date of the first contagion in the country- to February 2022, the daily average was

178

.

The fall is eloquent when measuring the figures of the last three months.

The record has been

32 deaths every seven days

, with a maximum of 67 in week 1 of 2023 and a minimum of 5 in week 5.

The number of deaths, without discriminating between vaccinated and unvaccinated,

dropped 10 times

between the first two years of the pandemic and the third.

If the magnifying glass is put

only on those vaccinated

, a piece of data allows us to approximate how much deaths were reduced between those who did not complete the first scheme (dose 1 and 2) and those who received three doses.

These proportions, included in the periodic epidemiological information published by the Government, are made on those

over 60 years of age

, the most vulnerable population.

The

reduction in deaths

due to the best vaccination coverage, sustained over time, has been measured at

5 times

.

In the country's intensive therapies there are currently 293 hospitalized for Covid.

So the general decrease in deaths in the last year, compared to the previous two, according to this logic, would have been

twice

the drop that has been registered between vaccinated and unvaccinated who lost their lives.

Different factors appear in this balance of prevented deaths that would not be explained by vaccination, including the age of those infected or the fact of not being a patient at risk, as well as having acquired natural immunity

after

a first infection.

Immunity that does not prevent contagion but reduces lethality.

The influence of Omicron is added, of all the variants known up to now, the one that experts have considered

less aggressive

due to the fact that its attack is more concentrated in the upper respiratory tract than in the lungs, as was the case with its predecessors.

These data on the dimension that the decline in deaths from Covid and its causes have acquired, prepared based on official records, come days after an investigation published in The Lancet tried to answer one of the million questions:

What protects more,

the vaccine or having had Covid

.

This work concluded that natural immunity is as persistent as that offered by the vaccine.

However, everything depends on the risk conditions of the patient and experts point to a

"hybrid immunity"

(vaccines plus convalescence) as the best tool to combat Covid.

The natural immunity against severe disease (hospitalization or death) granted by having overcome Covid remains

"solid"

for months and is effective with all variants of the virus, according to the meta-analysis published in The Lancet.

In the months after infection, immunity remains at a level of

88 percent above

, according to the study on 65 different investigations carried out in 19 countries.

The work suggests that the level and duration of protection against reinfection, symptomatic disease, and severe disease is at least

comparable

to that offered by

two doses of messenger RNA vaccines

such as those from Moderna and Pfizer in the case of Alpha, Delta, and variants. omicron.

The comparison, however, seems to contribute from its Manichaeism to the

cold statistics

, oblivious to the context that

both resources

(vaccines and natural immunity) interact and have fed back as a barrier against Covid.

In other words, strictly speaking, it would be abstract -in terms of public health- to think of one without the other.

Deaths and vaccinated by age

As for the age x-ray of the latest deaths from Covid in the country,

42.2 percent

of the 389 deaths registered from last November 19 to the present were

over 80 years of age

.

24.2 percent were between 70 and 79. Those between 60 and 69 represented 17.2 percent and those between 50 and 59 accounted for 6.7 percent.

15.2 percent were under 50

.

At the same time, in Argentina,

27 percent of those over 50 years of age

have not yet applied the third dose against Covid.

In the general population, this first reinforcement barely reached 48.7 percent and in people over 18 years of age, 60.5 percent.
