The majority of Germans are of the opinion that the federal government should do more than before to promote peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

In a survey by the online survey institute Civey this week, 63 percent advocated greater commitment by the federal government on this issue.

21 percent of those surveyed were against the federal government pushing ahead with such peace negotiations.

However, the citizens do not want such negotiations at any price.

42 percent of respondents say the aim of such negotiations for Ukraine should be to restore the country's borders before the 2014 annexation of Crimea.

33 percent are in favor of Ukraine only insisting on its land borders before the Russian attack in 2022, 17 percent of respondents are in favor of Ukraine giving up more territory in exchange for a withdrawal of Russian troops.

Only a good one in five (22 percent) agrees that Ukraine should stop defending itself in order to end the war as quickly as possible.

The Germans are divided on whether the media and public are sufficiently aware of opponents of the supply of main battle tanks.

45 percent of respondents agree.

But 46 percent of those surveyed said that the negative attitude towards arms deliveries is not sufficiently seen in the German public.

Respondents to the statement: »There is currently enthusiasm for militarization in Germany, which I think is wrong«, were similarly divided.

41 percent agreed, 50 percent disagreed with this statement.

There are clear differences between East and West on almost all issues.

In the east, there is more support for peace negotiations, against arms deliveries and for Ukraine to stop defending itself militarily.

Green supporters' positions also stand out in the results: they are most in favor of arms supplies and see a win by Russia in the war as the scenario that worries them most.

In no party is there a lower proportion of those who want the federal government to do more for peace negotiations.

It is also noticeable that the supporters of the left and the AfD are close in their attitudes to the war and Germany's role - and take the opposite position of the Greens.
