High tension between finance ministers and governors of the G20 at the Bangalore meeting: what divides is the war in Ukraine, where the reluctance of the Indian presidency of the G20 to insert the word "war" in the final communiqué, together with the opposition of China and of Russia itself, could remove from the document the "firm condemnation" of Moscow that Western members and their allies would like to insert.


Even the publication of a joint statement would be at risk.

Spanish Finance Minister Nadia Calvino said that "we cannot" water down the position agreed in Bali, from which Russia had emerged decidedly isolated.

A strong stance by the G20 finances, which in the final communiqué of the Bangalore summit firmly condemns the war launched by Russia in Ukraine, is "absolutely necessary".

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen

told Reuters

in the face of divisions on the position to be taken vis-à-vis Moscow.

Yellen explained that leaving a condemnation of the war out of the tax release would mark a step back from last November's G20 Bali summit.

"We cannot question what was approved in Bali and any other solution would be an unacceptable setback."

The European Commissioner for the Economy Paolo Gentiloni wrote it on twitter signaling that he represents the EU at the financial G20 in Bangalore, together with the president of the ECB Christine Lagarde and Elisabeth Svantesson, finance minister of Sweden, in the EU presidency.
