Spain has confirmed that in 2024 it will become one of the countries where the restrictions on the transfer of liquids and electronic items in the hand luggage of passengers on flights will be removed.
Aena, the national company in Spain responsible for the airports, has announced that by next year's summer vacation it will introduce new generation scanners at several of the country's major airports, including Madrid Barajas and Barcelona El Prat.

Smart CT scanners
These innovative scanners are actually advanced CT (computed tomography) scanners.
Sometimes they are called "3D scanners", since they create a 3D visible image of the contents of the hand bags that the passengers board the plane with.
After scanning, each such image is analyzed using a sophisticated algorithm that can automatically identify weapons, explosives and other prohibited items, including liquid explosives.
A number of airports, including in Amsterdam, have already introduced CT scanners of this type, and these have proven themselves to such an impressive degree that the security officials there have decided to significantly ease hand luggage restrictions or even remove them completely.
However, some countries that already use CT scanners still impose limits on the amount of liquids passengers can take in their hand luggage.
As mentioned, Spain is not alone: as published last year in Vala!
Tourism, the British government also plans to almost completely eliminate liquid restrictions as soon as the innovative equipment is also implemented in the country's major airports.
According to new legislation currently being presented to the British Parliament, passengers will be allowed to take up to two liters of liquids in their hand luggage.
The UK has also set a 2024 target date for major airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick and Birmingham.

Why is it forbidden to bring liquids onto the plane?
As you may recall, the rules related to putting liquids in the carry-on onto the plane were determined rather hastily in 2006. This was after the British and American intelligence services thwarted attacks by suicide terrorists who planned to put liquid explosives on passenger planes that were making their way from Great Britain to the United States and Canada.
These liquid explosives were found inside soft drink bottles.
The intelligence operation was even nicknamed "the thwarting of the transatlantic air attack".
It should be noted that CT scanners are already in use in the United States, but the United States Transportation Security Administration (TSA) claims that it may be a few more years before it is decided to ease the carry-on baggage rules in the country.
This is because the TSA is waiting until these scanners are implemented in most major airports, and only then will it begin the process of changing the federal requirements.
