We are all always happy for a raise, but the situations in which we can also get it - or at least ask for it - are few and usually end up in an annual salary conversation.

An employee whose performance is impressive by far can leverage this and ask his employer for an increase that reflects his great contribution to society, but many of these also experience difficulty in doing so.

Should I ask?

When to ask?

Do I really deserve it?

Are there things to consider?

Sapir Shoshan, branch manager at the placement company Manpower, presents the rules for demanding a salary increase:

understand what your added value is in the organization

and compare the situation that existed before you entered your position or received the project you are working on to the current situation.

If the difference is noticeable - give explanations about your contribution to reaching the current positive situation.

Talk about new developments you've led, about the creative approach you've taken and about growing your head.

Summarize by stating the results of your actions.

Know that pillowcases don't just belong to pillows

Do not come to this conversation with the amorphous statement "I deserve a raise".

Define in advance what amount you wish to receive and declare it.

Explain how you arrived at this amount.

Lack of preparation will paint you as less serious and hurt your chances of giving a positive answer.

Do research on the level of salary

before you ask for a raise. It is advisable to do a market survey on the prevailing salary in the position you are in.

You may be surprised and find that you are actually earning more than the average, so there is no good reason to ask for a raise.

You may find the opposite.

The working conditions and the benefits that come with it must also be taken into account.

Maybe the salary is "only" average for the position but the subsidized lunches, the company car and the annual vacation abroad make the difference.

Compare the size of the salary with the size of your responsibility.

Sometimes you can get a raise and continue working as a series, just as it was before, but sometimes the employer will expect you to take on more responsibilities in return.

He can also define new goals and performance indicators.

When he gives more - he also expects to receive more.

So before the request sit with yourself and decide: am I ready to meet everything that will be asked of me in exchange for a raise?

Find good reasons for a

tempting and inviting promotion to fall into the place of seniority.

"I've been in the organization for X years and I deserve more."

But seniority is not an achievement and is not an indication of what you have contributed to society.

In a job market that gives importance to dynamism and freshness this can even play against you.

Find other reasons why you deserve a raise.

Optimism and positivity - that's the name of the game

Come from a good and clean place, even if you think the workplace does not reward you properly.

Don't rush to talk about it and certainly don't present it as an argument for "why do I deserve a raise".

This may be perceived less well by the employer and produce the opposite attitude from the one you desire.

Pay attention to the timing in which you request

the time to request a raise is acute, even if you feel that we really deserve it.

Ask yourself: how long have I been with the company - is it enough to get a raise?

What is the state of the organization where I work - maybe it is in difficulties or the economy is in a recession?

When the ship is shaking on the surface of the water - it is not a good time to weigh it down even more.

Prepare yourself also for a negative answer and understand in advance what you will do if you receive it

that you are asking for a salary increase, it is quite possible that the answer will be negative.

It may also have nothing to do with your performance.

The managers may be very happy with you, but the company cannot afford higher expenses at the moment or giving a signal to the employees that it is raising wages.

In any case, prepare yourself for this possibility and also understand what it will mean for you.

When you hear the refusal, will it be a light blow to you, a sort of "we tried" or will you see it as a statement of lack of confidence in you and your worth and decide that if so - it's better for you to look for a job in a place that values you more.

Either way - it is advisable not to make the decision impulsively but on the basis of pre-prepared scenarios that you have thought about in depth.
